Building Permit & Inspection Requirements
To help ensure the safety, reliability, and code compliance of improvements made within UCSB Faculty & Staff housing communities, the following requirements apply to construction, alteration, and renovation work performed within residences and associated structures.
Projects involving modifications to structural elements, plumbing systems, mechanical systems, or electrical systems generally require a building permit and plan review prior to the commencement of work.
Before any work begins, an application for permit shall be submitted to the Deputy Campus Building Official. The application package should include:
- A written description of the proposed scope of work.
- Drawings, sketches, or plans sufficient to describe the work being performed.
- The anticipated duration and planned start date of the project.
- Manufacturer's specifications and product data sheets, as applicable, particularly for appliances, equipment, or systems that may affect electrical loads, circuit distribution, ventilation requirements, or utility connections.
- Any additional information necessary to evaluate compliance with applicable building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fire, and accessibility requirements.
Upon receipt and review of the application, permit and inspection fees will be established and communicated to the applicant. All checks shall be made payable to UC Regents in the amount established for permit and inspection services.
All permitted work is subject to inspection during construction and upon completion. Inspections are required to verify that the work has been performed in accordance with approved plans, applicable codes, and University requirements.
Work involving structural, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems shall not be concealed until the required inspections have been completed and approved. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in selective demolition of concealed work, at the homeowner's expense, to facilitate inspection. Additional inspections may be required depending on the nature and complexity of the project.
Prior to the commencement of work, a pre-construction meeting shall be held with the UCSB Inspector and the contractor to review the project schedule, inspection requirements, and procedures for requesting inspections throughout the course of construction. In the event work is to be completed in one day the meeting shall occur prior to the commencement of work.
Inspection requests, scheduling, and coordination shall be managed through the Deputy Campus Building Official
