landfill flyer

At UCSB, disposing of waste in the landfill is the last and most unattractive option, but unfortunately there are materials that we currently cannot avoid throwing away. UCSB’s landfill bound waste is disposed of at the Tajiguas Landfill, which is located approximately 20 miles north of the University on the Gaviota Coast.

What Can I Landfill?

UCSB strongly encourages reusing materials and if necessary purchasing materials that are compostable or recyclable, but if landfill bound material must be used, please dispose of it properly. BROWN is the designated color for landfill at UCSB. Common examples of landfill items include:

Styrofoam(cups, plates, packaging material)

Plastics with heavy contamination (food, glue, etc.)

Condiment packages

Waxy-like receipts

Carbon paper

Drinking glasses

Plastic bags - sandwich, produce, grocery, and retail bags

Plastic film - saran and bubble wrap

In the absence of compost receptacles, the following items can be placed in the landfill receptacles.

Food scraps

Compostable bags and food serviceware

Soiled paper products
